Out of the Margins: LBT+ advocacy network

Lesbians, bi women and trans (LBT+) people face exclusion and injustice, but there is relatively little research looking specifically at their needs and rights.

Their experiences are usually merged with those of the wider LGBTQ+ community and often ignored by larger human rights institutions. As a result, global movements aren’t able to address the unique issues that affect them.

Our Out of the Margins project

Out of the Margins was established in 2017, with the support of the FCDO, to advance the rights of LBT+ people through research centred on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project was rooted in local communities across 21 countries, using network-building and advocacy. A suite of reports were produced on the following topics – these can be found by visiting the Out of the Margins website.

In 2024, we have reactivated this network to tackle the impact of the anti-rights movement and the rollback of LBT+ rights, and to seize advocacy opportunities presented by the SDGs in the lead-up to 2030. With three partners in the Caribbean, Southern Africa, and Eastern Europe, we are developing innovative local strategies to advance LBT+ rights.

There have been several projects which are planned and/or have taken place:

  • Our partners in Georgia created a genealogy video on queer feminist activism to counter the misconcpetion that LGBTQ+ identities are imported from the West.
  • In Jamaica, our partners conducted a research project that will shed light on the impact of the anti-rights movement in the Caribbean is currently underway.
  • In Botswana, community engagement events with various stakeholders have produced incremental progress towards understanding and acceptance of LBT women and the challenges they face.
