This month marks LGBT+ History Month, a campaign founded by Schools OUT. This month is a time to celebrate our rich and diverse history, at a time where LGBTQ+ rights are being threatened.
This year’s theme: activism and social change
Throughout history LGBTQ+ people have been activists and helped drive social change, making the world a more inclusive place. At Stonewall, we’re proud to have been at the forefront of social change for the LGBTQ+ community throughout history.
We have been part of every major fight for LGBTQ+ rights since 1989, including:
- An equal age of consent for gay and bi men
- The end of Section 28 in Scotland, and England and Wales
- Same-sex couples becoming free to adopt children
- LGBTQ+ people becoming free to serve openly in the Armed Forces
- Protection from discrimination at work
- The right for same sex-couples to have civil partnerships
- The right for LGBTQ+ couples to be legally recognised as parents
- The right for same-sex couples to get married
- LGBTQ-inclusive teaching in the national curriculum
We’re proud of the change we have helped to make.
But there’s still a long way to go
Despite the progress made towards LGBTQ+ equality throughout history, and with the current shift in anti-LGBTQ+ feeling across the world, the fight for equality is far from over. LGBTQ+ people still face discrimination and exclusion.
Harmful conversion practices remain legal. These practices are abuse and there is no place for them in our society.
Last July, the Government announced plans for a draft Bill to ban conversion practices. We’re campaigning to ensure the ban is fully inclusive, protects all LGBTQ+ people, and has no loopholes that would allow abuse to continue. This year, the UK has a chance to make history.

Together, we can celebrate our past and shape a brighter, more inclusive future for LGBTQ+ people everywhere.
