Stonewall Wales
Stonewall Wales was established in 2003, following devolution and the creation of the Welsh Parliament/Senedd Cymru (formerly the National Assembly for Wales).
In the years since, we have played a key role in progressing LGBTQ+ equality in Wales through community engagement, our policy, public affairs and workplace programmes work.
- Policy and Public Affairs
Our policy and public affairs team work to advance and defend LGBTQ+ rights in Wales. We strive to work with communities, sector org and key stakeholders to work to advocate for LGBTQ+ equality across Senedd Cymru and Welsh civil society.
Stonewall Wales has been part of every major fight for LGBTQ+ rights in the Scottish Parliament, including:
- The end of Section 28 (Section 2A) in 2003.
- The Civil Partnership Act 2004 (England and Wales) is passed
- The Gender Recognition Act 2004(England and Wales) is passed
- The right for same-sex couples to get married in 2014.
- Authorisation of same sex-marriage or civil partnership blessed by Church of Wales (2021)
- Inclusion of Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE) in the new Curriculum for Wales (2022)
We are proud of our involvement in these achievements, and also the work which saw Wales introduce the first LGBTQ+ Action Plan for Wales.
We are currently supporting the Welsh Government and stakeholders on several pieces of work to promote, protect and realise the rights of every LGBTQ+ person in Wales, including addressing Hate Crime, Banning Conversion Practices and Inclusive Education.

- Workplace Programmes
Stonewall has been working with leading employers for over two decades to support them to embed inclusion.
Our Proud Employers programme is the leading workplace inclusion programme for organisations who are committed to creating places where LGBTQ+ people and their allies can thrive. Our dedicated Wales Programme Manager supports workplaces across Wales with locally relevant interventions that recognise this specific legal and social context.
We also work with the Welsh Government to deliver a range of free-to-attend programmes for people in Wales. These include community cafe events, future leadership development and community building programmes. Check out our events page to find upcoming events.
