Stonewall and ISS launch new LGBTQ+ Family Formation Guide

Published April 23, 2025

Today we launch our brand new LGBTQ+ Family Formation Guide, produced in Partnership with ISS. The guide is designed to support LGBTQ+ people to navigate the many paths to parenthood, a journey where they often face unique hurdles.

LGBTQ+ people can face additional challenges on their journey to parenthood, from navigating complex legal processes to dealing with discrimination or unexpected medical issues. This guide seeks to provide much needed support and guidance for people who want to become parents, either now or in the future.

LGBTQ+ communities have always embraced creative, caring, and resilient approaches to raising children, and this guide aims to honour and support that tradition. From carrying a child, donating eggs or sperm, co-parenting with friends, to fostering and adoption, the guide outlines the most common routes to parenthood for LGBTQ+ people. It also provides guidance on legal steps, medical processes, emotional preparation, and the day-to-day practicalities of family life.

Every parenting journey is unique, and this guide is here to help people feel informed and empowered at every step on the journey.

Simon Blake OBE, Stonewall CEO said:

“LGBTQ+ communities have always embraced diverse and resilient ways of forming families. But too often, LGBTQ+ people face additional barriers like discrimination, financial barriers and complex legal processes. LGBTQ+ people shouldn’t be left to figure it all out alone.

We're proud to launch our new Family Formation Guide in partnership with ISS to help people feel informed, empowered, and supported along the journey - whether they’re ready to become parents now or just starting to explore their options."
